ANCI THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ITALIAN MUNICIPALITIES

“The National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI), is a voluntary union of single or associated municipalities, which bases itself on Regional Associations (currently 20 Regional Sections) with their own autonomy. The municipalities, becoming a member of the National Association, automatically become a member of the Regional Association. Aim of the Association is the safeguard of the local autonomies recognised by the Constitution and the rights and interests of the members”.

The aims of the twenty Regional Sections/Associations of ANCI, limited to their areas, are the same as those of the National Association. The Regional Associations have statutory autonomy within the principles fixed by the Statute of the Association.

The tasks, the Association intends to achieve, can be resumed in the following points:

• to represent the interests of its members in front of the constitutional and administrative authorities of the State, the Regions and other national bodies.
• to promote and co-ordinate the study of problems and matters concerning local authorities and to organise debates and seminaries on specific themes.
• to supply the members with any useful information of their interest.
• to manage, if necessary, the interests of the members.
  to consult and to assist the members.
• to promote initiatives for the civil education of citizens and diffusion of the knowledge of the local institutions, as well as to promote the citizens participation in local government.
• to analyse problems connected to local government employees and to give general guide-lines in this matter.
• to co-ordinate the participation of the Italian Municipalities at the Policies conducted from the European Union.
• to promote and co-ordinate the international relations of the members and their activities in the field of international development cooperation.

In Italy, out of the 8094 municipalities, 7133 (representing ca. 90% of the entire Italian population) are members of the National Association. The General Assembly of Members is responsible for the changes in the Statute of the Association.
